In other news, I've just had the damp man round, and he says that their damp-proofing is fine (good), and the neighbours' baths aren't leaking (good good), but that the new plastering has too much salt in it and is therefore damp and will need to be torn out and replaced, at a cost of four hundred and twenty five pounds (for a fairly small area).

Grk.

I could ignore the problem, but there will never be a better time to replaster, while the bedroom floor is still partly unlaid, so I think I'd better stump up the money.

Then there's the matter of the blown-down-fence (still propped up, with the gate unusable). And the fan for the bathroom. And the carpet that needs replacing.

I'm never going to have new clothes or footwear again. Or a table. Or a bookcase. Or CDs. Or travel to see people ...

This business of being an adult is highly overrated!

Hygroscopic is the word he used when he looked at it. I get the impression that the sand used to mix up the plaster was too salty, and so the plaster's pulling humidity into the walls from the air. Which might be ok except this wall's next to the bathroom.

The real irritation is that the underlying cause of the damp (well, except for the bathroom) has been dealt with by the insertion of a damp proof course. The damp proof course was plastered over (in May), and, hey presto, expense is my uncle.

Or something.

I could go and try and get some redress from the people who did the plastering, but I suspect they'd come back and say it wasn't their fault, and people might be mean, and ...
