The more I read about New Orleans, the sicker I feel.

Toronto's paper, The Globe and Mail, had an interesting analysis.

It's terrifying. That's a good article, and reminds me of (I think) the point of Bowling for Columbine which went on about Fear being behind a lot of the American gun culture.

I feel really sorry for the decent sane people in NO, and the rest of the world when this is representative of the greatest nation in the world. It's like a science fiction movie gone wrong.

Where's Kurt Russell with an eyepatch when you expect him?

They had another interesting article about the tourists (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20050902.wtourist0902/BNStory) in New Orleans. I assumed they all would have evacuated early, but apparently not. A bunch of them were turfed out of their hotel and left to wander on the streets. They tried to leave the city but were turned back at a bridge by armed police. They had these really wistful quotes from a Canadian woman saying she'd never had to sleep on the street before.

(Of course, it's very easy to identify with the better-off tourists. )

Probably not the experience they thought they were paying for...

Still, I wonder if there is a market for urban survival holidays.

Horrible isn't it ? I'll always remember this - for the way the 'land of the free' left the poor to drown (hey, *now* they find buses for free transport - why not before the damn storm?!), and the way everyone then suddenly started acting like they were in mad max and killing and robbing for survival became acceptable somehow.

The thing is that I am sure they will all say that it's inevitable that people will start acting like savages and in their own best interests - but I dont think thast true. It depends entirely on the value system you have, and the value system is the US is way too geared towards individual suuccess at the expense of others. I dont think this would have happened in your country, or in mine, or in many others, do you ?

Ironic for a country that was lauched like this - those words have been lost somewhere along the line.
